Biography
David Matthew Macfadyen is an English actor born on October 17, 1974, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and began his career on the British stage and in television, earning early recognition in the BBC series Spooks (MI-5) from 2002 to 2004.
Macfadyen received widespread acclaim for his role as Tom Wambsgans, the obsequious, socially ambitious husband of Shiv Roy, in the HBO drama Succession (2018-2023). His brilliant comedic and dramatic timing in the role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2022.
Beyond Succession, Macfadyen is well known for playing Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice alongside Keira Knightley. He has also appeared in the films Anna Karenina (2012), Ripper Street (2012-2016), and the Enola Holmes films. He is married to actress Keeley Hawes.
