Character Arc

Aemond Targaryen is the second son of King Viserys I and Queen Alicent, a prince forged by resentment and ambition. As a child, he was mocked for being the only Targaryen of his generation without a dragon, a humiliation that drove him to claim the fearsome Vhagar — the largest living dragon — at a young age. He lost an eye in the confrontation that followed, gaining a sapphire eye patch and an abiding hatred for Rhaenyra's sons that would shape the course of the civil war.

Aemond is everything his older brother Aegon II is not: disciplined, martially skilled, and dangerously intelligent. He models himself after Daemon Targaryen, whom he both despises and admires, becoming the Green faction's most formidable warrior. His killing of Lucerys Velaryon — Rhaenyra's son — above Shipbreaker Bay is the act that makes the Dance of the Dragons inevitable, though the show portrays it as partially accidental, adding tragic complexity to an already volatile character.

In Season 2, Aemond seizes effective control of the Green war effort, sidelining both his injured brother Aegon and the cautious Otto Hightower. His cold pragmatism and willingness to use Vhagar as a weapon of mass destruction make him the most feared figure in the war. Yet beneath his steely exterior lies a man driven by deep insecurity, desperately trying to prove himself worthy of the power he has claimed.

? Frequently Asked Questions

Ewan Mitchell plays the adult Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Leo Ashton played the younger version. Mitchell's intense, menacing performance made Aemond one of the show's breakout characters.

Aemond lost his eye as a child in a fight with Lucerys and Jacaerys Velaryon (Rhaenyra's sons) after he claimed the dragon Vhagar. Lucerys slashed Aemond's eye with a knife. Aemond later wears a sapphire in the empty socket.

The show portrays the killing as partially unintentional. Aemond pursued Lucerys on Vhagar to intimidate him, but Vhagar — being old, massive, and difficult to control — killed Lucerys's dragon Arrax, leading to Luke's death. Aemond's shocked reaction suggests the outcome went beyond his intentions.

Aemond rides Vhagar, the oldest and largest living dragon in the world. Vhagar was once ridden by Visenya Targaryen during the original Conquest and is so enormous that she dwarfs every other dragon in the series.
