E4
King of the Narrow Sea
The rift between Alicent and Rhaenyra deepens when Alicent discovers Rhaenyra lied about her relationship with Daemon.
Alicent Hightower begins as Rhaenyra Targaryen's closest friend, a pious and dutiful young woman maneuvered by her ambitious father Otto into marrying King Viserys I. What starts as political obligation becomes genuine affection, but her position as queen — and mother to potential heirs — inevitably puts her on a collision course with her former best friend. The slow dissolution of Alicent and Rhaenyra's friendship is the emotional backbone of House of the Dragon.
As queen, Alicent finds herself trapped between her father's political machinations and her own growing conviction that her sons are in mortal danger. She comes to believe — perhaps genuinely, perhaps through willful misinterpretation — that Viserys wished for their son Aegon to rule, based on his delirious final words about "the prince that was promised." This belief provides the moral justification for the coup that ignites the civil war.
Season 2 strips away Alicent's political power as the men around her — Aegon, Aemond, Criston Cole — seize control of the war effort and marginalize her counsel. Forced to reckon with the consequences of the conflict she helped start, Alicent undergoes a painful reckoning. Her secret meeting with Rhaenyra reveals a woman exhausted by the war and haunted by what she has set in motion, struggling between maternal devotion and the growing realization that peace may require sacrifices she never imagined.

Olivia Cooke plays the adult Alicent Hightower. Emily Carey played the younger version in Season 1. Cooke's nuanced portrayal of Alicent's inner conflict has been widely praised by critics.
This is deliberately ambiguous. On his deathbed, Viserys spoke about "Aegon's dream" — referring to Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy about the prince that was promised. Alicent interpreted this as a wish for their son Aegon to inherit the throne, but Viserys was actually speaking to Rhaenyra about the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy.
Their relationship evolves from best friends to political rivals to wartime enemies, though the show maintains an underlying thread of lost love and regret. Their Season 2 secret meeting demonstrates that personal affection still exists despite the war between their factions.
