The Name of the Game
Hughie's girlfriend Robin is killed by A-Train, setting him on a path of vengeance.
Hughie Campbell is an ordinary electronics store employee whose life is destroyed when the superhero A-Train runs through his girlfriend Robin at super-speed, killing her instantly while Vought covers up the incident. This trauma transforms the meek, anxiety-prone Hughie into a reluctant vigilante who joins Billy Butcher's team to take down corrupt superheroes.
Hughie serves as the audience surrogate — the normal person navigating a world of gods and monsters. His moral compass provides the counterweight to Butcher's nihilism, and his romance with Starlight (Annie January) gives the show its emotional heart. Their relationship is complicated by her being a member of The Seven and him working to destroy it, creating a Romeo-and-Juliet dynamic with superhero stakes.
As the series progresses, Hughie struggles with feelings of inadequacy and a desire to protect Starlight, sometimes making reckless decisions like taking Temp V to gain powers of his own. His arc explores toxic masculinity, the desire to be a hero, and the realization that true strength comes not from superpowers but from moral courage.

Hughie and Starlight's romance deepens despite being on opposite sides.
Hughie uses Temp V powers for the first time in the chaotic "Herogasm" episode.
