Jimmy McGill is introduced as a struggling public defender trying to build a legitimate legal career in Albuquerque.
Jimmy McGill begins as a small-time con artist turned public defender, desperate to earn the respect of his brilliant older brother Chuck and the legal establishment that views him as "Slippin' Jimmy." Working out of the back room of a nail salon, Jimmy possesses genuine legal talent and a gift for persuasion, but his instinct to cut corners and bend rules puts him at constant odds with the profession's ethical boundaries.
The central tragedy of Better Call Saul is watching Jimmy's gradual transformation into Saul Goodman — the flamboyant, morally bankrupt criminal lawyer first introduced in Breaking Bad. Each season peels back another layer of his ethical compromise: Chuck's betrayal and death, his falling out with Kim Wexler, and his deepening involvement with the Salamanca drug cartel all push Jimmy further from legitimacy. The show argues that Jimmy's corruption is not a sudden break but a slow erosion, each small compromise making the next one easier.
By the final season, Jimmy has fully become Saul Goodman and eventually Gene Takavic, a fugitive managing a Cinnabon in Omaha. His decision to confess his crimes in the series finale — sacrificing his freedom to reclaim his true identity — is a moment of genuine redemption. Kim Wexler's visit to him in prison, where she calls him "Jimmy," confirms that the person he was never fully disappeared.
