John Blackthorne

John Blackthorne is an English navigator who shipwrecks on the coast of Japan in 1600, becoming the first Englishman to set foot on Japanese soil. Initially imprisoned and facing execution, Blackthorne's knowledge of European warfare and his potential as a political tool make him valuable to the feudal lord Yoshii Toranaga, who is engaged in a deadly power struggle for control of Japan.

Blackthorne enters Japan with European cultural arrogance, viewing Japanese civilization as inferior.
