Character Arc
Alex P. Keaton is the eldest child of Steven and Elyse Keaton and the breakout figure of Family Ties. An unapologetic young conservative and devotee of free-market economics, Alex idolizes business success, dresses in shirts and ties as a teenager, and views his parents' 1960s idealism with affectionate exasperation. Originally conceived as a supporting character, Alex quickly became the show's focal point as audiences responded to his fast-talking wit and surprising vulnerability.
Beneath the ambitious exterior, Alex is fiercely devoted to his family, and many of the series' most memorable moments come when his self-assured armor slips. Storylines explore his competitive drive at school, his complicated romances, and his role as a big brother, particularly his tender bond with youngest sibling Andrew, whom he takes under his wing. The character's pragmatism is repeatedly tested against the warmth and ethics his parents instilled in him.
Across the run of the show, Alex matures from a brash high-schooler into a college student preparing to leave home for a career in finance. One of the series' most acclaimed arcs follows his grief and guilt after the death of a close friend, a dramatic turn that showcased the character's emotional depth. By the finale, Alex's departure for a job in New York becomes the emotional climax of the family's story.
