Character Arc
Austin Hogan is the warm, candid and quick-witted heart of the series, a 28-year-old autistic man living in Canberra with his close-knit family. When he discovers that the famous British children's author Julian Hartswood may be his biological father, Austin reaches out with a directness and optimism that immediately sets him apart from the guarded, self-interested adults around him. His honesty and lack of pretense repeatedly cut through Julian's posturing, and much of the show's humour comes from the gap between Austin's straightforwardness and the social games the other characters play.
Across the series Austin grows from a young man eager to know where he came from into someone increasingly confident about who he is and what he wants from the people in his life. He navigates the complicated reality of welcoming a flawed, famous stranger into his world while remaining grounded by his mother and grandfather, who fiercely protect him. Rather than treating his autism as an obstacle to be overcome, the storytelling lets Austin's perspective shape events, giving him agency, humour and emotional depth.
As his bond with Julian deepens, Austin becomes the catalyst for the personal growth of nearly everyone around him, gently pushing his father to become less selfish and more present. His arc is ultimately one of mutual transformation: in seeking a relationship with Julian, Austin helps build the family he wanted while teaching the adults around him about loyalty, sincerity and acceptance. The character has been embraced by viewers as the emotional centre and breakout figure of the show.
