Character Arc
Baek Sa-eon is the presidential spokesman at the heart of When the Phone Rings, a composed and influential public figure who has built a reputation for control, discretion, and political poise. He enters a contract marriage with Hong Hee-joo, an arrangement that serves the interests of both families, and he treats the relationship with the same guarded formality he brings to his public life. At home he and Hee-joo live as polite strangers, and Sa-eon keeps his deeper feelings and history carefully hidden behind a calm exterior.
When a hostage crisis places Hee-joo in danger, the distance Sa-eon has maintained collapses. Forced to act, he reveals how much he is willing to risk for a wife he had kept at arm's length, and his measured composure gives way to fear, resolve, and long-suppressed emotion. As a buried secret from their shared past comes to light, his understanding of the marriage, and of himself, is reframed, exposing the motives and wounds beneath his controlled surface.
Across the series Sa-eon's arc moves from cold obligation toward protectiveness and genuine connection. He becomes a man trying to shield the people he loves while navigating political pressure and the unraveling of secrets, and his slow shift from detachment to devotion anchors the show's blend of suspense and romance. His danger and confrontations are framed with restraint, emphasizing tension and emotional stakes over spectacle.
