Character Arc
Bobby Donnell is the brooding, conflicted founder of the struggling firm that bears his name, a working-class kid from Boston who built a practice out of grit and stubborn idealism. He believes fiercely in the right to a defense, yet that belief constantly collides with the queasy reality of fighting for clients he suspects are guilty. McDermott plays him as a man whose handsome surface barely contains a roiling moral unease.
Across the early seasons Bobby drives the firm through near-bankruptcy, ethical minefields, and high-stakes trials that test how far he will bend the rules to win. His romance with prosecutor turned colleague Lindsay Dole brings a measure of warmth, but also new vulnerability, as personal and professional lines blur dangerously. The pressure of leadership slowly grinds against his convictions.
By the middle of the series Bobby's idealism has been battered into exhaustion, and a devastating turn in his marriage and his standing at the firm pushes him toward the exit. His departure marks the end of an era and clears the way for the show's later reinvention. He remains the wounded heart of the firm's founding mythology.
