Character Arc
Brad Wolgast is a federal agent introduced as a competent, emotionally guarded man still reeling from personal tragedy. The death of his young daughter and the dissolution of his marriage to Lila Kyle have left him hollowed out, and he throws himself into his work to avoid feeling the loss. When his superiors task him with retrieving test subjects for Project Noah, he treats it as just another job, even as he begins to sense the moral rot at the heart of the operation.
Everything shifts when he is ordered to bring in Amy Bellafonte, a ten-year-old orphan chosen because she has no one to miss her. As the two travel together, Amy reawakens the protective, paternal side of Wolgast that he buried with his daughter. The more he learns about what the project intends to do to her, the less he can stomach his orders, and he ultimately makes the decision to defy the people he works for and disappear with the girl rather than deliver her to the lab.
For the rest of the season Wolgast is a fugitive and a reluctant guardian, hunted by his own former colleagues while trying to keep Amy safe and understand the strange changes the virus has triggered in her. His arc is a redemption story disguised as a chase thriller, the journey of a broken man who finds a reason to fight again in his fierce, fatherly devotion to a child who is not his own but who comes to mean everything to him.
