Character Arc
Carlton Banks is Will's preppy, privileged cousin, a straight-laced overachiever who idolizes establishment figures and sees the world through the lens of his sheltered Bel-Air upbringing. Short in stature but enormous in confidence, he is endlessly optimistic, fiercely loyal to the family's status, and perpetually exasperated by Will's streetwise attitude, making the two an inseparable comic duo.
Carlton's earnestness becomes the source of some of the show's most enduring moments, none more famous than his joyful, unselfconscious dance to Tom Jones's music that fans dubbed the Carlton Dance. His rivalry and deep friendship with Will drive countless storylines, from college applications and fraternity rushes to schemes that inevitably backfire, revealing a character who is naive yet good-hearted.
As the series progresses, Carlton matures from a sheltered rich kid into a more self-aware young man, navigating heartbreak, ambition, and the pressure of living up to his father's expectations. His unwavering bond with Will, despite their constant bickering, gives the show much of its warmth, and Carlton ultimately stands as one of the most beloved and quotable characters of 1990s television.
