Character Arc
Eugene Choi is born into a slave household in Joseon Korea and, as a child, escapes the country amid violence during a conflict with American forces. Reaching the United States, he grows up an outsider and eventually becomes an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Years later he is stationed in Korea, returning to a homeland that once treated him as property and carrying complicated feelings about both the nation of his birth and the country that took him in.
Back in Joseon, Eugene crosses paths with Go Ae-shin and is gradually drawn into her world and the secret independence movement she serves. His arc traces the tension between his American identity and his Korean roots, between personal safety and the cause of a country to which he owes little yet feels increasingly bound. His romance with Ae-shin deepens even as the political situation grows more dangerous.
Across the series Eugene moves from a guarded, self-protective outsider toward someone willing to sacrifice for others and for Korea's future. His choices form much of the emotional and tragic core of the drama. (Character details are summarized for fan reference and should be verified against the series.)
