Character Arc
Godmother is Fleabag's stepmother-to-be, a passive-aggressive artist whose weaponized politeness conceals a deeply territorial and manipulative nature. A successful sculptor who creates grotesque sexualized artwork, she has been a presence in the sisters' lives since their mother's death, having been their mother's close friend before marrying their father. Her title — always "Godmother," never by name — is laden with irony, as she is anything but nurturing toward her stepdaughters.
Godmother's genius lies in her ability to disguise cruelty as concern. She delivers cutting remarks with a warm smile, undermines Claire and Fleabag's confidence while maintaining the appearance of maternal care, and has their father so thoroughly wrapped around her finger that he cannot see the damage she inflicts. Her art — sexualized sculptures displayed prominently in her home — serves as a constant assertion of dominance over the domestic space.
In Season 2, Godmother's marriage to the sisters' father becomes the catalyst for the season's events, bringing together the characters for an engagement dinner, a family counseling session, and finally the wedding itself. Her theft of Fleabag's mother's belongings, including a treasured sculpture, represents her systematic erasure of the sisters' maternal connection. Olivia Colman's Emmy-winning performance transforms what could be a one-note villain into a masterclass of controlled menace — every smile hiding a knife.
