Character Arc
Han Joo-won is a young, elite police inspector from a powerful and privileged family, reassigned from Seoul to the rural Manyang station. Cool, exacting, and proud, he arrives convinced of his own judgment and quickly fixes his suspicion on Lee Dong-sik, whom he believes is hiding something about the town's unsolved cases. His early certainty makes him both formidable and blinkered.
As the investigation deepens, Joo-won's controlled exterior is steadily tested. The more closely he watches Dong-sik, the more his own assumptions, family history, and motives are drawn into the open, and the partnership becomes a mirror that forces him to confront what he is willing to do for the truth. The cat-and-mouse dynamic between the two men gradually shifts from pure antagonism toward a wary, hard-won understanding.
Joo-won's arc is one of disillusionment and growth: a man who begins believing the truth is something he can simply extract from others learns how tangled, painful, and personal it can be. Yeo Jin-goo's performance, balancing icy composure with mounting vulnerability, was a critical highlight and earned major awards recognition alongside his co-star.
