Character Arc
Hannah McKay enters Dexter's life as a witness in a cold case investigation, a woman with a dark past who was involved in a killing spree with her boyfriend Wayne Randall as a teenager. Beautiful, intelligent, and seemingly reformed, Hannah hides a calculating nature beneath a gentle exterior — she is a poisoner who has killed multiple people, including her wealthy husband. What makes Hannah unique in Dexter's world is that she is the first person who fully knows what Dexter is and accepts him without judgment. Unlike Rita, who loved Dexter's mask, Hannah loves the real Dexter — darkness and all.
Their relationship is equal parts romance and danger, two predators who recognize themselves in each other. Hannah challenges Dexter's code by being someone he should kill but cannot bring himself to, and their passionate connection represents a version of intimacy Dexter has never experienced. In Season 8, Hannah returns to Miami and becomes a surrogate mother figure to Harrison, ultimately fleeing to Argentina to start a new life. When Dexter fakes his death in the finale, he sends Harrison to live with Hannah — trusting his son to the one person who understands the darkness that may live inside him. Hannah's role raises uncomfortable questions about whether two monsters can create something approaching a family.
