Character Arc
Jang Deok-su, Player 101, is a violent gangster and loan shark who enters the Squid Game to pay off debts owed to more powerful criminals. Large, loud, and physically imposing, Deok-su is the show's most overtly menacing player — a bully who immediately establishes dominance through intimidation and brute force, building a gang of followers who do his bidding in exchange for protection.
Deok-su represents the predatory side of human nature that the game's designers count on. While other players struggle with moral dilemmas, Deok-su embraces the violent logic of the competition without hesitation. He murders other players during the dormitory lights-out sequence, hoards food, and bullies weaker contestants. Yet even his ruthlessness has limits — when faced with the glass bridge game, his terror is palpable and his bravado crumbles.
His death on the glass stepping stones is both karmic and pitiful. Trapped at the front of the line, unable to bully his way past the situation, Deok-su is pushed off the bridge by a desperate player behind him. The man who lived by intimidation dies because he could not force his way through a puzzle that required luck, not strength.
Deok-su serves as a crucial narrative counterpoint to Gi-hun, demonstrating that brute force and selfishness are ultimately self-defeating strategies in a system designed to exploit everyone equally. His character also grounds the show's social commentary — even criminals are trapped in cycles of debt and desperation that feed the game's machinery.
