Character Arc
Jang Ho-woo is the protagonist of Numbers and the first and only high-school-educated accountant to join Taeil Accounting Firm, one of South Korea's four largest accounting houses. Without the elite university pedigree that nearly all of his colleagues share, he enters the firm as a clear outsider and must prove that talent and effort can outweigh connections and credentials.
Driven by ambition and a strong sense of justice, Ho-woo throws himself into demanding audits and high-stakes assignments, quickly demonstrating a sharp eye for numbers and the discrepancies that others overlook or deliberately ignore. His persistence repeatedly pulls him into cases where the firm's clients, and sometimes the firm itself, are hiding fraud, manipulated accounts, or corruption.
Over the course of the series, Ho-woo's refusal to let wrongdoing slide turns him into a destabilizing force within a hierarchy built on loyalty and self-interest. His arc is a classic underdog journey in which grit, skill, and integrity are tested against institutional power, personal risk, and the temptation to compromise his principles in order to get ahead.
