Character Arc
James Evans Jr., known to everyone as J.J., is the eldest of the three Evans children and the family's resident comedian and aspiring artist. A talented painter with dreams of success, he is best known for his lanky physical comedy, exaggerated expressions, and his signature exclamation, "Dyn-o-mite!" His humor and antics quickly made him one of the most popular and recognizable characters on the show.
Beneath the jokes, J.J. is portrayed as good-hearted and loyal to his family, even as his schemes and get-rich-quick ideas often land him in trouble. He frequently clashes with his strict father James over responsibility, while sharing playful sibling rivalries with his sister Thelma and acting as an older brother to the more serious Michael. Storylines explore his ambitions as an artist as well as the temptations and dangers of life in the neighborhood.
As the series progressed, J.J. became its breakout figure, and "Dyn-o-mite!" turned into a national catchphrase. This shift drew criticism from castmates John Amos and Esther Rolle, who felt the character had become a buffoonish caricature that undercut the show's more grounded social themes. Despite the controversy, J.J. remained a defining part of Good Times throughout its entire run.
