Character Arc
Joseph Joestar takes center stage in Battle Tendency as a brash, quick-witted young man from New York, a sharp contrast to the noble protagonist of Phantom Blood. Rather than overpowering enemies, Joseph relies on trickery, improvisation, and his mastery of Hamon, frequently predicting his opponents' next moves and turning their own schemes against them. His confrontation with the ancient Pillar Men forces him to grow from a cocky brawler into a genuinely heroic strategist.
Joseph's charm lies in his irreverence and resourcefulness; he treats deadly battles with a streak of humor and audacity that endears him to fans. Throughout Battle Tendency he forges unlikely alliances and overcomes seemingly impossible odds through sheer cleverness, cementing a reputation as the most cunning of the Joestars. His victories feel earned through ingenuity rather than brute strength.
By Stardust Crusaders, Joseph reappears as an older, gruffer patriarch who awakens his own Stand, Hermit Purple, and guides his grandson Jotaro on the mission to stop Dio. He remains a vital presence in Diamond Is Unbreakable as well, where his legacy continues to ripple through the family. Aging from a roguish youth into a wise but still spirited grandfather, Joseph embodies the series' theme of an evolving, enduring bloodline.
