Character Arc
Joshua Nolan is a human veteran of the Pale Wars who spent years scavenging the transformed wastelands as a roving 'ark hunter' before fate brought him to the town of Defiance. Haunted by his combat past yet fiercely protective, Nolan stumbles into the role of the town's chief lawkeeper after the previous one dies, and he gradually commits himself to defending the fragile peace between humans and Votans despite his own cynicism.
At the emotional heart of Nolan's story is his bond with Irisa, the Irathient girl he rescued and raised as his daughter. Their relationship anchors the series, with Nolan repeatedly risking everything to protect her, even as her connection to ancient Votan forces draws them both into danger.
