Character Arc
Jules Vaughn arrives in East Highland as the new girl in town — a transgender teenager whose confident exterior masks deep-seated fears about femininity, desirability, and acceptance. Her relationship with online validation, particularly through encounters with older men, reveals a young woman still searching for a sense of self that exists independent of the male gaze.
Jules's connection with Rue provides her with something she has never had: unconditional acceptance from someone who sees her as a complete person rather than a fetish or a novelty. However, Jules simultaneously carries on a secret online relationship with a person she knows as "Tyler" — who is actually Nate Jacobs — adding layers of deception and danger to her storyline.
The special bridge episode between Seasons 1 and 2, focused entirely on Jules, dives into her therapy sessions and reveals the full depth of her internal conflicts. She grapples with her transition, her relationship with femininity, and the realization that she has been performing a version of womanhood designed to please others rather than herself.
In Season 2, Jules navigates the fallout of her complicated feelings for both Rue and Elliot, while confronting the reality that she cannot save Rue from addiction. Her arc is ultimately about self-discovery — learning to exist for herself rather than as a reflection of what others want her to be.
