Character Arc
Kim San is the idealistic young elite at the center of Uncle Samsik's vision for the future. Ambitious and driven, he believes deeply in turning his country's fortunes around through modernization and disciplined nation-building, convinced that careful plans and reform can lift a postwar South Korea out of hardship. His earnest conviction sets him apart in a world thick with self-interest, and it is precisely that idealism that draws the attention of the fixer Park Doo-chil.
San's arc is defined by his uneasy alliance with Samsik, a partnership between a hopeful reformer and a pragmatic operator who could not be more different in method. United by a shared goal of a prosperous future, the two navigate the entrenched systems and rival interests standing in their way. As the story progresses, San is repeatedly forced to weigh his principles against the compromises that real power seems to require, and the friction between his ideals and Samsik's tactics becomes one of the drama's central engines.
Over the course of the season, Kim San matures from a hopeful believer into someone tested by the hard realities of politics and ambition. His relationships, including his bond with Joo Yeo-jin, deepen the personal stakes of his public mission. Played by Byun Yo-han, San serves as the moral and emotional counterweight to Samsik, embodying the question of whether idealism can survive contact with the machinery of power.
