Character Arc
Kotaro Azumi is one of the two protagonists of Tsuki ga Kirei, a quiet and bookish third-year middle-school student who aspires to become a novelist. An avid reader with a particular fondness for Osamu Dazai, he is a member of his school's calligraphy and literature circles and tends to keep to himself, more comfortable putting his thoughts into writing than speaking them aloud. When he is placed in the same class as Akane Mizuno, a chance series of small encounters slowly draws the two together.
Over the course of the series, Kotaro grows from a reserved boy who struggles to voice his feelings into someone willing to take real emotional risks. Much of his courtship of Akane happens through hesitant text messages, where he can be more honest than he manages in person, but he gradually finds the courage for face-to-face confessions and small, decisive gestures. His ambition to write and his uncertainty about the future, including entrance exams and where his path may diverge from Akane's, form a quiet undercurrent to his arc.
Kotaro's storyline is defined less by dramatic conflict than by the ordinary bravery of adolescence: admitting he likes someone, navigating rivals and friends, and choosing to hold on to a first relationship despite the obstacles. His sincerity and gentle persistence make him a grounded, sympathetic lead in one of anime's most realistic depictions of young love.
