Character Arc

Kumiko Oumae is the series protagonist, a euphonium player who joins the Kitauji High School concert band more out of habit than passion after a discouraging end to middle school. Initially passive and prone to keeping her feelings to herself, she often observes the drama around her rather than acting on it, hiding her real thoughts behind a noncommittal smile.

As the band fights for a place at nationals, Kumiko is forced to confront her own motivations and her complicated feelings about talent, effort, and honesty. Her growing closeness with Reina Kousaka challenges her to take her music and her relationships more seriously, and a string of difficult auditions and conflicts pushes her to find her own voice.

Across the three seasons she matures from an uncertain first-year into a trusted leader within the ensemble, eventually stepping into a central role guiding the band. Her arc is the emotional spine of the series, tracing how a quiet girl learns to commit fully to the people and the music she cares about.
