Character Arc
Kyotaro Ichikawa is the heart of the series, a small, quiet, and intensely introverted middle-school boy who masks his insecurity with grandiose, edgy fantasies. He pictures himself as a brooding outsider and indulges in dark, theatrical daydreams, a classic case of chunibyo, but in reality he is gentle, observant, and painfully self-conscious. He prefers hiding in the school library to socialising, convinced that no one really sees him.
His world tilts when he develops a secret fascination with the popular class model Anna Yamada. At first he watches her from a wary distance, but a series of small, accidental encounters draws them together. As Anna keeps seeking him out, Kyotaro is forced to step outside his shell, and his cynical inner monologue is repeatedly undercut by genuine, fumbling tenderness.
Across the series Kyotaro grows from a guarded loner into someone capable of honesty, courage, and real affection. His arc is a quietly moving portrait of a boy learning that vulnerability is not weakness, and that being truly known by another person is worth the fear. His dry, anxious narration remains a constant source of both comedy and warmth.
