Character Arc
Leticia Padilla Solis, universally called Lety, is the heart of La Fea Mas Bella. A brilliant economist with top academic credentials, she is repeatedly passed over for jobs because of her unfashionable appearance, complete with oversized glasses, braces, and shapeless clothing. Her warmth, honesty, and razor sharp intelligence make her instantly sympathetic, and her struggle to be valued for her mind rather than her looks anchors the entire series.
Hired as personal assistant to Fernando Mendiola at the production company Conceptos, Lety becomes the quiet engine that keeps the business running, untangling its finances and protecting it from collapse. She falls deeply in love with Fernando, even as she endures mockery from glamorous coworkers and is unaware that he is using her devotion for his own ends. Her loyalty to her friends in el cuartel de las feas gives her strength through the humiliations.
Over the course of the story Lety discovers the truth about how she has been manipulated, leaves to prove her worth on her own terms, and eventually returns transformed in confidence and appearance. Her journey from overlooked underdog to self assured woman who is finally loved for who she truly is gives the telenovela its emotional payoff and made the character an icon of the format.
