Character Arc
Makoto Kowata is the heart of Flying Witch: a fifteen-year-old witch-in-training who, following witch tradition, leaves home to live independently while continuing her studies. She relocates to the Aomori countryside to stay with her relatives, the Kuramoto family, accompanied by her black cat companion Chito. Soft-spoken, easygoing, and a little absent-minded, Makoto has a famously poor sense of direction, often getting lost on the simplest of errands.
Throughout the series, Makoto's arc is one of quiet acclimation rather than dramatic transformation. She adjusts to a new town and school, deepens her bond with her young cousin Chinatsu, and steadily practices the everyday craft of witchcraft, from foraging wild plants to caring for a magical garden. Her gentle curiosity and willingness to share her world make magic feel approachable and warm rather than otherworldly.
Though still very much a novice compared to her formidable older sister Akane, Makoto grows in confidence as she meets fellow practitioners and embraces the small wonders around her. Her journey embodies the show's healing spirit: she learns that becoming a capable witch is less about grand feats and more about patience, kindness, and finding magic in ordinary life.
