Character Arc
Murphy Brown is the title character and central figure of the series, a celebrated investigative journalist and co-anchor of the fictional newsmagazine FYI. When the show begins, she returns to work after a stay at the Betty Ford Center, having committed to sobriety after years of heavy drinking and smoking. Fiercely intelligent, blunt, and intensely competitive, Murphy is a respected veteran reporter who is also notorious among her colleagues for being demanding and difficult to work for.
Across the series, Murphy's hard-edged persona is balanced by recurring relationships that reveal her vulnerability, including her bond with house painter Eldin, her rivalry-turned-friendship with co-anchor Corky Sherwood, and her mentor-like dynamic with producer Miles Silverberg. A landmark storyline in the 1991 to 1992 season has Murphy become pregnant and decide to raise the child on her own as a single mother, a plot that drew national political attention and became one of the most discussed moments in 1990s television.
In later seasons, Murphy continues to balance her career with single parenthood while remaining the driving personality of the FYI newsroom. The final original season includes a storyline in which Murphy is diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoes treatment, handled with a mix of drama and the character's trademark humor. Candice Bergen reprised the role for the 2018 revival, revisiting Murphy as a still-formidable journalist returning to the changed landscape of cable and morning news.
