Character Arc
Nam Gi-jun is the central figure of Mercy for None. Once part of the criminal underworld, he stepped away years earlier after an incident that reshaped his life, choosing distance from the gang world and a quieter existence over the path he had been on. That choice defines him: he is a man who deliberately gave up power and proximity to violence in order to leave it behind.
His arc is set in motion by the death of his younger brother, Nam Gi-seok. Grief and the need for answers pull Gi-jun back into the world he renounced, and the series follows him as he works methodically to trace what happened. He is portrayed as composed, disciplined, and relentlessly focused, less interested in spectacle than in reaching the truth, even as that pursuit forces him to navigate rival organizations and old ties.
Across the season, Gi-jun functions as a classic noir protagonist: haunted by his past, single-minded in his goal, and increasingly aware that the answer he is chasing is tangled up in the city's shifting balance of power. His journey is framed around the mystery of his brother's death and the cost of returning to a life he had tried to escape.
