Character Arc
Elizabeth "Polly" Gray is the matriarch of the Shelby family and the backbone of the Peaky Blinders. While her nephews were away fighting in World War I, Polly ran the family business single-handedly, establishing herself as a formidable leader in her own right. Her intelligence, spiritual intuition, and fierce protectiveness make her the emotional and strategic anchor of the family.
Polly's personal journey is defined by loss and resilience. The forced removal of her children by the authorities years before the series begins left deep scars, and her reunion with her son Michael becomes a central storyline. Her Roma heritage connects her to a world of spirituality and intuition that contrasts with Tommy's cold rationalism, yet both prove equally powerful.
As the series progresses, Polly becomes increasingly assertive in demanding recognition for her contributions. She challenges Tommy's authority when she believes he is leading the family astray, and she is the only member of the family who can truly stand as his equal in terms of cunning and resolve. Her romantic relationship with painter Ruben Oliver and later with Aberama Gold reveal a woman who craves connection despite the hardness her life has demanded.
Helen McCrory's untimely death in 2021 meant that Polly's fate in the final season was handled off-screen, with her death becoming a pivotal emotional catalyst. Her absence looms over Season 6, a testament to how central Polly was to the Shelby family and to the show itself.
