Ranma Saotome is a gifted sixteen-year-old martial artist raised by his father Genma to master the Anything-Goes school of martial arts. After falling into the cursed Spring of Drowned Girl at Jusenkyo in China, he gains the ability to switch between male and female forms with cold and hot water, a condition that drives much of the series' comedy and many of his social headaches.
Proud, competitive, and quick to brag, Ranma rarely backs down from a challenge, whether it comes from a martial-arts rival or his reluctant fiancee Akane. Beneath the bluster, however, he is loyal and surprisingly tender-hearted, repeatedly risking himself to protect Akane and his friends even as he refuses to admit his feelings.
Across the series Ranma slowly matures from a boastful loner into someone who genuinely cares about the chaotic found family around him. His rivalries with Ryoga and others soften into grudging respect, and his constant clashes with Akane gradually reveal an affection neither is willing to say aloud.
