Character Arc
Reiko Kujirai is the protagonist of Kowloon Generic Romance, a real-estate agent who works and lives in the labyrinthine Kowloon Walled City. Outwardly easygoing and a little messy in her habits, she anchors the series with her everyday warmth, her appetite and her unspoken affection for her older colleague, Hajime Kudo. Much of the early story is told through her perspective as she tries to make sense of feelings she is not sure she is allowed to have.
As the series progresses, Reiko becomes the lens through which its central mystery comes into focus. She begins to notice that her memories do not quite line up with the world around her, and that the comforting nostalgia of Kowloon may be concealing something about who she is. Her arc balances the tenderness of the romance with a growing unease, as she is forced to ask whether the life she remembers truly belongs to her.
Reiko's journey ultimately ties the personal and the speculative together. Her search for the truth about herself runs parallel to her relationship with Kudo, and the resolution of the series depends on how she reconciles the two. She is written as quietly resilient, choosing to keep moving forward and to hold onto connection even as the ground beneath her sense of identity shifts.
