Character Arc
Richie Cunningham is the wholesome, red-headed heart of Happy Days, an earnest and likable teenager growing up in 1950s Milwaukee. As the middle child of the Cunningham family, he embodies the show's optimistic spirit, balancing schoolwork, part-time jobs, an interest in writing, and the everyday challenges of adolescence. Richie is the audience's anchor and moral center, often the voice of decency among his friends.
Much of Richie's story revolves around his friendships, especially his close bond with Potsie Weber and Ralph Malph and his admiring, almost brotherly relationship with Fonzie, who frequently steps in to offer streetwise advice. Over the seasons Richie matures from a somewhat timid high-schooler into a more confident young man, pursuing journalism and navigating romance with sincerity and humor.
Richie eventually leaves the core narrative when he joins the Army and is stationed overseas, a development written to accommodate Ron Howard's departure from the series to pursue directing. His absence is felt by the gang, and his occasional later appearances are treated as warm reunions, underscoring how central he had been to the show's identity.
