Character Arc
Ghalia is the emotional center of Segn El Nesa, a seamstress whose quiet competence masks a hard life shaped by loss and limited choices. As written by Mariam Naoum and performed by Nelly Karim, she is presented as resilient and strong willed rather than helpless, a woman who has learned to carry responsibility from a young age. The series uses her steady presence to anchor an ensemble of women whose paths cross inside the prison.
Over the course of the thirty episodes Ghalia becomes connected to the world of the prison after her mother, who served as a warden, passes away. Her storyline also includes a relationship with Saber, a microbus driver who initially appears charming but gradually reveals himself to be manipulative. The breakdown of that relationship is one of the most discussed threads of the series and drives much of Ghalia's later development.
Ghalia's arc is widely read as a portrait of endurance under pressure. Through her, the show explores how betrayal, family duty, and economic strain can corner a person, while still allowing room for dignity and agency. Nelly Karim's restrained, internal performance was central to the series being praised as a serious, humane drama rather than melodrama.
