Character Arc
Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko is the comic heart of the series, an underpaid, idealistic history teacher who rides a bicycle to work, lives with his bickering parents, and is perpetually short on cash. When a classroom tirade about honesty is secretly filmed and goes viral, his students crowdfund a campaign on a lark, and the flustered teacher is launched into the top job in the country almost against his will.
Much of Holoborodko's arc is built on culture-shock comedy: a man of simple habits suddenly surrounded by motorcades, obsequious aides, designer suits, and a palatial residence he finds faintly ridiculous. He keeps trying to do the decent, common-sense thing while baffled by protocol and tempted by no one, repeatedly bumping up against the absurd customs of his new world. Recurring dream sequences featuring historical figures give the character a whimsical inner life.
Over three seasons the running gag is that Holoborodko never stops being an ordinary, slightly rumpled everyman at heart, no matter how grand his surroundings. His warmth, exasperation, and stubborn ordinariness make him an easy underdog to root for, and the role became the signature comedic creation of the series.
