Character Arc
Tim Taylor is the accident-prone host of Tool Time, a Detroit cable home-improvement program he co-hosts with the patient Al Borland. A former salesman for the fictional Binford Tools, Tim is defined by his love of power, his trademark grunt, and his conviction that almost anything can be improved with "more power" — a philosophy that routinely leaves him with singed eyebrows, blown fuses, and trips to the emergency room.
Beneath the bravado, Tim is a devoted husband to Jill and father to sons Brad, Randy, and Mark. Much of his growth across the series comes from learning to listen rather than fix, often after dispensing or receiving advice over the backyard fence from his half-hidden neighbor Wilson. His marriage with Jill is built on genuine love tested by his stubbornness and her insistence that he engage with feelings he'd rather avoid.
Over eight seasons Tim gradually matures from a man who treats emotions like a malfunctioning engine into someone who can admit fault, apologize, and put family first. He never loses his goofy competitiveness or his fascination with horsepower, but he becomes a steadier partner and parent, embodying the show's recurring lesson that strength includes vulnerability.
