Where his comrade Vorenus is all discipline, Pullo is pure impulse: he drinks, gambles, whores, and kills with the same uncomplicated gusto, and yet keeps stumbling into the great events of the age as if history itself can't resist him.

The lovable brute turns out to have the steadiest moral compass of anyone in Rome — loyal to Vorenus past all reason, devoted to the slave girl Eirene, and quietly decent in a city that rewards none of it.
