Character Arc
Daniel Larcher is the town doctor of Villeneuve, a thoughtful and respected man who is thrust into public responsibility when circumstances push him into the role of mayor early in the occupation. Initially hoping to keep the town functioning and to shield his neighbors from harm, he tries to act as a steady hand during a period of growing uncertainty and pressure.
Over the course of the series, Daniel must repeatedly weigh the demands placed on him against his conscience. His position forces him into negotiations and compromises he never sought, and the drama uses his predicament to explore how a fundamentally decent person can be drawn into morally fraught situations simply by trying to manage them responsibly. His relationships with family and townspeople are tested as the years wear on.
By the later seasons and into the postwar period, Daniel carries the weight of the choices he made under occupation. The show treats him not as a hero or a collaborator but as a man trying to do right in impossible conditions, and his arc becomes a meditation on responsibility, reputation and the long shadow that wartime decisions cast over ordinary lives.
