Character Arc
Venus Flytrap, whose real name is Gordon Sims, is WKRP's smooth and charismatic overnight disc jockey, known for his stylish wardrobe, cool delivery, and soulful on-air presence. Recruited by program director Andy Travis early in the first season, Venus quickly becomes an integral part of the station and forms an easy rapport with morning DJ Johnny Fever, the two representing different generations of radio talent.
Beneath the polished broadcast persona, the series gradually reveals a more serious side to the character. In one notable storyline it is disclosed that Gordon Sims had served in the Army and gone absent without leave, and the resolution of that history is handled with unusual sensitivity for a sitcom. He is also shown to be intelligent and civic-minded, most memorably in an acclaimed episode where he explains the dangers of drugs to a teenager using a vivid, science-based analogy.
Venus Flytrap was a significant role in giving an African American character both glamour and depth on network television in the late 1970s. Tim Reid's performance balanced humor and dignity, and the part helped launch a long career; Reid would go on to create and star in the acclaimed series Frank's Place and later appear in the family sitcom Sister, Sister.
