Character Arc
Dr. Victor Ehrlich is a surgical resident at St. Eligius whose eager, sometimes awkward enthusiasm makes him one of the series' most endearing and frequently comic figures. Tall, earnest, and prone to overconfidence, Ehrlich aspires to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and chief of surgery, Mark Craig, often seeking Craig's approval even as he absorbs his mentor's withering critiques. His blend of ambition, vanity, and underlying decency gives the character a distinctive warmth.
Over the course of the series, Ehrlich matures from a green and self-impressed trainee into a more capable and self-aware physician. His personal life, including his relationships and his evolving sense of identity, is woven through the show's many storylines, and his interactions with patients and colleagues frequently balance humor with genuine emotional stakes. The mentorship dynamic between Ehrlich and Craig becomes one of the program's recurring through-lines, charting the difficult, rewarding path from student to surgeon.
As one of the longest-serving members of the St. Eligius ensemble, Ehrlich reflects the show's interest in professional growth and the formation of young doctors under pressure. By the later seasons he has grown considerably in skill and confidence while retaining the good-natured eccentricity that made him a fan favorite. The role became one of the signature parts of Ed Begley Jr.'s career and earned him multiple Emmy nominations.
