Character Arc
Will Girardi is the moral backbone of the family and of Arcadia itself, a veteran cop who takes over as the city's police chief just as the series begins. Principled to a fault, he soon finds himself at odds with a department riddled with corruption, and his refusal to look the other way puts both his career and his family under pressure. He is a father trying to hold everything together while the ground keeps shifting beneath him.
Across the first season Will investigates a string of cases that test his judgment and his patience, all while worrying about his children, especially Kevin, whose paralysis has reshaped the household. His marriage to Helen is the show's quiet anchor, a partnership built on honesty even when honesty is painful. Joe Mantegna gives him a weathered warmth that makes his integrity feel lived-in rather than saintly.
In the second season Will's world grows more complicated as old enemies resurface and new threats emerge in Arcadia. He remains stubbornly devoted to justice and to his family, even when the two seem to pull in opposite directions. His grounded, dogged decency provides the perfect counterweight to Joan's encounters with the divine.
