About Beau Sejour
Beau Sejour is a Flemish-language Belgian mystery drama that first aired on the public broadcaster VRT in 2017 before reaching an international audience through Netflix. Set in a small town near the Belgian-Dutch border, the series opens when teenager Kato Hoeren wakes in a room at the Beau Sejour motel and finds her own lifeless body beside her. Unable to remember how she got there, she soon realizes that almost no one can perceive her presence.
The central conceit is that exactly five people are able to see and hear Kato, and each of them is connected to the circumstances of her death in some way. Rather than dwelling on graphic detail, the story treats the mystery as an investigation: Kato shadows the people who can see her and pieces together the final hours she cannot recall, while the local police pursue their own inquiry. The result is a slow-burn whodunit threaded with a supernatural premise.
Across its ten episodes the show layers small-town secrets, family tensions and motorcross subculture into a tightly plotted puzzle. A second, standalone season later transplanted the same five-witnesses format to a new setting and a new cast, functioning as an anthology continuation rather than a direct sequel. Critics highlighted the first season's atmosphere, its restrained tone and Lynn Van Royen's grounded lead performance as Kato.
