About Brethren
Brethren is a Nigerian crime drama that follows two adopted brothers, Dobara, known as Bara, and Dagogo Kurukeme, known as Dags, whose shared upbringing pulls them toward very different futures. Bara joins the Special Crimes Unit, an elite squad tasked with confronting organized crime in the city, while the story uses his work to introduce the officers and informants who make up that world. The series frames the bond between the brothers as its emotional center, set against a backdrop of investigations, loyalty, and difficult choices.
Much of the tension turns on the Special Crimes Unit's pursuit of a notorious criminal network operating in Lagos, often referred to as the Aja Isale Eko gang. As Bara and his colleagues work to dismantle the syndicate, the case forces the brothers to weigh family ties against duty and the law. The show treats the conflict as a contest of wills among people who each believe they are protecting something, building its drama from relationships and moral pressure rather than spectacle alone.
Produced by the veteran Nigerian filmmaker Femi Odugbemi, whose credits include long-running titles associated with Nigerian television, Brethren premiered in 2019 and streamed on Showmax. It draws on a familiar ensemble of Nigerian screen talent, anchored by Daniel Etim Effiong as Bara, and was received by fans as a grounded entry in the country's growing slate of streaming-era scripted dramas. The series sits within a broader wave of Nigerian original programming that pairs local settings with crime-thriller storytelling.
