About Citas Barcelona
Citas Barcelona is a 2023 Spanish-language romantic anthology produced by Filmax for Prime Video and TV3, conceived by Pau Freixas as a revival of the acclaimed Catalan series Cites and adapted from the British format Dates. Each chapter follows a single first encounter between two people who matched on a dating app and have agreed to meet face to face for the very first time, somewhere across Barcelona. There is no overarching plot and no recurring couple to follow; instead the series builds its emotional world one date at a time, returning again and again to that charged, uncertain moment when two strangers sit down across from each other and try to decide whether the spark is real.
The pleasure of the show is in its restraint. A date might unfold over a single long conversation in a bar, a walk that drifts toward the port, or an evening that detours, unexpectedly, into a hospital waiting room. The dialogue carries everything, and the series lets its actors play the small, recognizable beats of modern romance: the rehearsed openers, the awkward silences, the moment a guarded confession changes the temperature of the table. Barcelona is a character in its own right, with the Sagrada Familia, the Rambla, and the seafront framing encounters that range from tender to funny to quietly heartbreaking.
Across its episodes the anthology gathers a deep ensemble of Spanish and Catalan screen talent, with each story standing on its own while sharing the series' warm, humane curiosity about why people keep trying to connect. Among the most talked-about pairings are a New Year's Eve meeting between Laura and Jan and a first date for Juanqui that takes a sharp, comic turn. The result is a clean, tasteful portrait of contemporary dating, attentive to loneliness, hope, and the surprise of being truly seen by someone new.
