About De Luizenmoeder
De Luizenmoeder (The Head Lice Mother) is a Dutch comedy set at De Klimop, a chaotic primary school where idealistic new teacher Juf Ank tries to run a happy group 3 classroom while juggling eccentric colleagues, anxious helicopter parents, and the daily mayhem of school life. The title refers to the luizenmoeder, the parent volunteer tasked with checking children for head lice after every holiday, a small but recognizable ritual of Dutch school culture.
Created by Jan Albert de Weerd and Ilse Warringa, the series mixes warm, character-driven humor with sharp satire of modern parenting, school bureaucracy, and political correctness. Juf Ank means well but often fumbles; principal Directeur Anton is well-meaning yet hopeless at decisions; and the parents of the group 3 children turn every fundraiser, holiday play, and parent evening into a battleground of competing anxieties and good intentions.
Broadcast on NPO 3, De Luizenmoeder became a genuine ratings phenomenon in the Netherlands, drawing some of the largest audiences in modern Dutch television and turning catchphrases such as We zijn allemaal mensen (We are all human) into national in-jokes. Its blend of recognizability and gentle absurdity made it a cultural touchstone, later spawning a feature film, and it remains one of the most beloved Dutch comedies of its era.
