About Ergo Proxy
Ergo Proxy is a 2006 anime produced by Manglobe and directed by Shuko Murase, with series composition by Dai Sato. Set in the enclosed, climate-controlled dome city of Romdeau, it imagines a far-future society where humans and humanlike robots called AutoReivs coexist under a strictly ordered system. The series pairs a muted, painterly visual style with a contemplative tone, and it is widely regarded as one of the more cerebral entries in the cyberpunk tradition.
The story follows Re-l Mayer, a sharp and privileged inspector tasked with investigating a series of unusual incidents linked to the AutoReivs, and Vincent Law, a quiet immigrant trying to earn his place in Romdeau. Their paths cross around the mystery of the Proxies, enigmatic and seemingly godlike beings whose existence challenges everything the city teaches about order, identity, and what it means to be alive. Traveling with them is Pino, a cheerful child-shaped AutoReiv companion whose curiosity brings warmth to a somber journey.
More an extended meditation than a conventional adventure, Ergo Proxy threads questions of selfhood, memory, and free will through its slow-burning plot, with episodes that range from a quiz-show pastiche to dreamlike interludes. Its fusion of philosophical themes, moody electronic-tinged soundtrack, and ambiguous storytelling has earned it a devoted cult following among fans of thoughtful, atmospheric science fiction.
