About Jubilee
Jubilee is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language period drama created by Vikramaditya Motwane and co-created and co-written with Soumik Sen for Amazon Prime Video. Set in the late 1940s and 1950s during the golden age of the Bombay film industry, the series unfolds against the backdrop of a newly independent nation and the partition of India, using the rise of talking pictures and the studio system as a lens on ambition, reinvention, and the manufacture of stardom. Across ten episodes the show traces how a single screen name can be conjured, fought over, and weaponized.
The story orbits the powerful Roy Talkies studio, run by mogul Srikant Roy, and his search for a leading man to launch as the matinee idol Madan Kumar. His trusted aide Binod Das harbors his own buried longing for the spotlight, while a brash refugee from Karachi, Jay Khanna, arrives in Bombay determined to make pictures of his own. Drawn into the orbit of these men is the studio's reigning star Sumitra Kumari, whose private life is tangled with Roy and whose career embodies the glamour and precarity of the era. As alliances curdle into rivalries, the question of who gets to be Madan Kumar becomes a story about identity, betrayal, and the cost of a dream.
Praised for its painterly period craft, lush production design, and Amit Trivedi's evocative score, Jubilee was widely regarded as one of the most ambitious Indian streaming dramas of its year. The ensemble performances, the recreation of mid-century studio Bombay, and Motwane's measured, slow-burning storytelling drew strong reviews, and the series went on to win multiple honors at the Filmfare OTT Awards and the Indian Television Academy Awards. A continuation has been widely anticipated, with the first season's open threads inviting a second chapter.
