About Kota Factory
Kota Factory is an Indian web series produced by The Viral Fever (TVF) and created by Saurabh Khanna. Widely described as India's first notable black-and-white web series, it is set in Kota, Rajasthan, the city that has become the country's coaching-class capital for engineering and medical entrance examinations. The show follows Vaibhav Pandey, a teenager who relocates to Kota to prepare for the highly competitive IIT-JEE, and traces his attempts to adjust to a town organised almost entirely around exam preparation.
Across its run the series widens its lens from a single student to the broader ecosystem of coaching institutes, hostels, mess halls and the families who send their children to Kota with enormous expectations. Central to the story is the physics teacher Jeetu Bhaiya, a mentor figure whose blunt honesty, study advice and concern for students' wellbeing make him the emotional anchor of the show. Vaibhav's friendships with hostel-mates such as Balmukund Meena, Uday Gupta and Meena, and his relationships with peers like Vartika and Shivangi, fill out the world.
Kota Factory earned wide acclaim for treating the pressures of competitive exams with empathy rather than melodrama, and for its naturalistic, low-key tone. The first season premiered on TVF's YouTube channel and the studio's app in 2019; subsequent seasons moved to Netflix, with the third season released in 2024. The show has been credited with sparking broader public conversation in India about student stress, coaching culture and mental health, and is frequently cited alongside TVF's other grounded successes.
