About Like Water for Chocolate
Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate) is a Mexican period drama that adapts Laura Esquivel's beloved magical-realism novel for HBO Max. Set on the De la Garza ranch in northern Mexico during the upheaval of the Mexican Revolution, the series follows Tita, the youngest of three daughters, who is bound by an old family tradition that forbids the youngest girl from marrying so that she can care for her mother until death. When Tita falls in love with Pedro, that tradition becomes a prison, and her only escape is the kitchen.
Tita's cooking carries her emotions into every dish she prepares, and all who eat her food are overcome by whatever she felt while making it. A wedding cake soaked in her tears spreads heartbreak through the guests, and a meal touched by her desire ignites uncontrollable passion. Through these magical meals, the show stages a quiet rebellion against the rules imposed on her by her formidable mother, Mama Elena, and the rigid customs of the era.
Executive produced by Salma Hayek Pinault, the series leans into lush visuals, regional Mexican cuisine, and the sweeping backdrop of revolution to tell a story of forbidden love, family duty, and female resistance. Premiering on November 3, 2024, the adaptation earned attention as a high-profile HBO original rooted in Mexican literature and was renewed for a second season.
